Hey, I'm Ansel Burch, I'm Sarah Moore, I'm Ben banks,

Ansel Burch 0:09

and it's time to party. We're not doctors. We don't give medical advice. Please drink responsibly. Today's episode was recorded on July 1, 2025 Oh, welcome, friends. Welcome. Oh, I'm so very excited to have on the pod with us today two incredible performers and people, two good friends known each of you for years at this point,

Sarah Moore 0:41

and that's because we're all so old now.

Ansel Burch 0:45

Because we're all so old, we just kept dying time

Sarah Moore 0:52

marching upon us,

Unknown Speaker 0:55

yeah, oh my goodness.

Ansel Burch 1:00

But the thing that brings us together today is that the three of us are all part of another podcast from indecisionist Productions called for the time being, actual play podcast of a game that I designed, and we get to play time travelers. And it's, it's a good it's a good time this month, in July, you can hear, along with our coverage of Connecticut, Yankee and King Arthur court, there is a game where we are playing in in the Arthurian period for for the time being. So go ahead and check that out wherever podcasts are downloaded. Sarah, you are an incredible performer, a producer. Thank you, creator, a streamer, a burlesque dancer. Mom just got it all going on. Yeah? My

Sarah Moore 1:48

business card is very large. It's a placard,

Ansel Burch 1:51

yeah, do you just like, get, like, a big plaque? Yeah? It's

Sarah Moore 1:55

like, scrolls. I've been giving out scrolls.

Ansel Burch 1:58

Okay, well, that, hey, that's, that's very on theme. Yeah, at least, yeah, pixies and pins is the place for people to find you online, wherever they're searching, right, everywhere.

Sarah Moore 2:07

I mean, I think Facebook is still actor Sarah Moore, because somebody else has pixies and pins and won't give it to me on Facebook, but everywhere else, literally everywhere else, pixies and pins, I know I would get into a fight, but, like, I can't get into a fight because I'm and

Ansel Burch 2:26

on the topic of being a multi hyphenate, Ben, you are all over the place as well. DJ, producer, event, event planner, am I correct? You're doing some new events as well. Photographer,

Unknown Speaker 2:38

yeah, yeah.

Ansel Burch 2:40

Got got a lot of irons in the various fires, just

Ben Banks 2:44

trying to find what sticks, just doing what I can having fun.

Ansel Burch 2:47

There you go, and you're pretty consistently. DJ, blendian, all over the place, right?

Speaker 2 2:54

Yes, I am, yeah. DJ, underscore, bln. DN, stylized it with no vowels.

Unknown Speaker 3:02

Yeah,

Ansel Burch 3:04

vowels are links to all of that will be in the show notes, of course. Yeah, that's true. You must have Welsh ancestry, yeah,

Sarah Moore 3:13

just pack all those consonants together. Made up extra vowels, put them in there.

Ansel Burch 3:21

But yeah, and, and we watched a really cool movie, if you are not hip to the Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's court. We specifically watched the one from 1949 that was featuring Bing Crosby and Rhonda Fleming. And we always like to read the synopsis for the audience at home, in case you haven't gotten to watch the movie yet. And this one, this one's really going to knock your socks off, guys, I don't think you're ready for the quality of the synopsis we got from IMDb this month. A Singing mechanic from 1912 finds himself in Arthurian Britain. That's it. That's the That's all of it. That's it. Oh, I was waiting for, I was waiting for more me too. Yeah, I scrolled past it twice. Oh, oh, it's there. That's all you need,

Sarah Moore 4:16

because, because it was Bing Crosby, and at the time, you could just say it's the new Bing Crosby movie, and everyone would go to it, because he was a massive star.

Ansel Burch 4:27

And that is true. I did a little bit of research ahead of this, and yeah, it was the number one film released at Radio City Music Hall possibly ever. It made ridiculous sums of money. It was a holiday release, so of course, it got all that going for it. But yeah, yeah, this was this a big, big movie in its time. Yeah and yeah. It takes advantage of the fact that not only is Bing Crosby a big star, but also Rhonda Fleming, who I hadn't really heard. Much about apparently, was a huge deal name either. And the here, the sad thing is that, according to Wikipedia, which, of course, knows all things, the reason she's a big deal is that she looked especially good in Technicolor. That that is the whole reason that that people credit for her being so popular,

Sarah Moore 5:21

it's her hair. It's, I bet it's the red hair. Like good hair, yeah, I think because

Ansel Burch 5:32

may also have been color. I wonder if it's a color use thing, because I know a lot of a lot of a lot of folks struggled when they switched from black and white to Technicolor, because to look to get things to look right in black and white, you got used to a certain like, color palette in your your like, whatever your standard makeup look was, whatever your standard colors were going to be, they had to be very different, bonkers

Sarah Moore 5:58

from one to The like, it is bonkers to do that. Like to have it, I mean, like, I think a classic, like, Hey, this is a thing that happened for black and white film, The Addams Family House. You know, everybody remembers the Addams Family House and how it was shades of pink the actual set, because that is what read correctly, saturation wise, to make it the different variances for black and white. And so I think a lot of people, I mean, like interesting looking like clowns, legitimately like their makeup and and costuming was crazy because it was all for all of the different it was just, they were just looking at the different saturations and how they would show up on film.

Unknown Speaker 6:55

Yeah, that's very

Ansel Burch 6:57

interesting. Yeah, all hue, no Chroma, yeah. But anyway, we can talk more about that during our review of the movie.

Sarah Moore 7:05

So sorry, if you're new here, already steered us away.

Ansel Burch 7:09

That's that's a teaser, is what that is. That's a teaser. If you're new here, friends at home, what we're doing is is going to be in three parts. This first episode, we are going to talk a little bit about the movie like we have, and we are going to give you some smoking and drinking games rules rather to choose from, so that when you do get to watch the movie or watch it again, you have something to make it a little extra fun in your back pocket. Now, don't do all of these by God, please don't you would die. Please pick a few a la carte. Maybe do it with a group of friends. Everybody gets to pick different rules, and you all go away and point at the screen whenever you see one. That's a great way to go. Also, we're not in charge of what you're drinking. It goes without saying you drink whatever you want, or just point the screen to go away. That can be the whole game, yeah. But hopefully the extra little bit of engagement makes the movie that much more fun to watch. And then next week, if you tune back in having watched the movie, we're going to give you a full review of the film, spoilers and all. We're going to tell you exactly what happens. So make sure you get a chance to watch it. It is available for free on Tubi, or at least it was for me. And I think you can also find bits of it on YouTube, and probably you can pay, like, $4 to watch it somewhere without commercials, yeah,

Sarah Moore 8:31

the only place that I found it without, for free, in its totality, was to be, yeah, they do not have it in on YouTube. They do not have the 1949 full. They have a couple of, like, previews and a couple of excerpts, but they do not have the full.

Ansel Burch 8:51

Yeah, I was not able to find it there either, which seems odd. I wonder if there's somebody's got to have the rights to it. I guess

Sarah Moore 8:59

you could also pay for it on Amazon Prime. Yeah. I,

Ansel Burch 9:03

as with most, you can go to Jeff's house of compromises and get yourself yeah an hour and a half of Yeah. And then on our third episode, we will, we will get into it edutainment mode, and we're going to talk a little bit about things that inspired us throughout the course of the movie. So let's go ahead and kick it off on this first episode and talk about those drinking and smoking rules. I think this is a good movie for drinking and smoking. You know, it's got that different pacing from the 40s that really like lends itself to, you know, you don't need to watch the whole movie with your whole eyes. You can, you can sort of get the vibe as you're going. But I also feel like this is the kind of movie that lends itself to a pairing. So I kind of want to put you guys on the spot and ask, what would you draw? Rink with this movie. Like, what would be your your beverage of choice to go with the vibe of this film? Hmm, I

Sarah Moore 10:10

mean, that's a rough one. I think I'm gonna go

Speaker 2 10:13

old fashioned. Ooh, an old fashioned, old fashioned. Yeah, go down nice and smooth with this movie.

Ansel Burch 10:20

You know, Bing is a bourbon boy.

Sarah Moore 10:22

So I would imagine that that is true. Of course, of course, I am allergic to whiskey, so I cannot have an old fashioned so I'm going to and also, in general, I just don't hold my alcohol well anymore. I used to be very good at it in college, and then I had a couple of babies back to back, and never got my tolerance back. And so I really enjoy drinking things that are delicious and that I can nurse for a really long time. And I'm just gonna say that my the one that I have found most recently, that I really enjoy is a Hugo 75 do oh yeah, which is like elderflower liqueur and gin and like some kind of bubbly wine. I think it technically calls for Prosecco. But I like all of my drinks to taste like dessert. So I like to use Moscato and then there's mint, mint in it. So that is what I would

Ansel Burch 11:30

Oh, it is a very classy beverage that. That is a very good choice. It sounds

Ben Banks 11:36

very classy. This movie is classy.

Ansel Burch 11:40

Man, I I am nerded out that your favorite beverage is a Hugo 75 that is, that is so cool.

Sarah Moore 11:47

Yeah. I mean, in general, especially when I'm like, working and stuff, I usually people get weird about you not having a drink in your hands when you're at like, a burlesque club, right? And so I always drink a Shirley Temple, because then it looks like I'm drinking something, but it's non alcoholic, but if I'm actually going to have something, yeah, Hugo 75 is my current drink of

Ansel Burch 12:11

choice. I mean, this would be a good Shirley Temple movie as well. I will say

Sarah Moore 12:15

it would, yeah, for sure. It would be a good shirt. All movies are good Shirley Temple movies. And

Ansel Burch 12:20

I actually kind of went along a similar line to you guys, because, you know, the old fashioned classic, and the Hugo 75 is a classic. I was thinking about, like, what did people drink around this time? I was thinking, you know, we never drink anymore. Is vermouth, like vermouth has gotten such a bad name lately. And if you do it right, if you get good vermouth and you serve it properly, it is, it is delightful, low proof, like wine experience. And so I would say, go ahead and try yourself some vermouth that would make for a good, good pairing and a nice little trip to the Wayback Machine for what, what people were drinking in the 40s and 50s.

Sarah Moore 13:14

I don't know that I've ever had straight well for me,

Ansel Burch 13:19

you know it? It doesn't come up very often.

Speaker 2 13:21

Yeah, I don't think I've had it either. I've had it mixed with things, but not by itself.

Ansel Burch 13:25

I also had never thought of drinking straight from booth until I watched Bringing Up Baby. I think it was, that's the one where, where she's got the leopard. It's a captain Hepburn Cary Grant joint. Very good. Highly recommend. Doesn't hold up 100% but you can't expect it to anyway, she ordered straight vermouth, and I was like, What the hell yeah, it's actually, it's not bad

Speaker 2 13:49

if Catherine's drinking it, of course. Yeah,

Sarah Moore 13:53

it's for the Jaguar. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I feel like Catherine Could, could drink motor oil and would probably be fine. Oh, yeah, she seemed like a tough old broad, so I don't know that that's something that we should be deciding on.

Ansel Burch 14:14

Well, shall we go ahead and dive into our rules?

Ben Banks 14:17

Yeah, sounds good. I've got them here. I'm ready.

Sarah Moore 14:21

I have a third that I didn't

Omar Burgos 14:25

tell you. Ooh, a secret rule.

Sarah Moore 14:27

Secret rule, it will give you alcohol poisoning. So the first one is anytime that Sandy is a servant face, anytime she gives instead of a line, a wistful glance, or looks of surprise or disgust, like her face is very animated during this movie, like it's, I think it's very clear that she cut her teeth in maybe the maybe on the stage. Burch, perhaps because it is that girl got a lot of face. I

Ansel Burch 15:04

like that. How about you? Ben, what's your first What's your first rule out the gate, my

Speaker 2 15:08

first one is anytime it feels like a song is about to start, because I didn't realize it was a musical. So when he starts singing, I was like, oh, what's going on. And so I was expecting it so many times, and it didn't happen as often as I thought it

Sarah Moore 15:27

would be. Songs, yeah. There was a lot of, like, musical swells that just didn't go anywhere. It was like, it was like, yeah. It was like, yeah. They were just musically edging us. The whole time I was about to

Unknown Speaker 15:43

say, musical edging is what you're gonna say, Yeah,

Ansel Burch 15:49

that's a technical term, entering it into the filmic lexicon. Yeah,

Sarah Moore 15:53

the composers are like, this is our favorite thing to do. Check this out.

Ben Banks 16:01

Nope, just kidding. They're gonna give to their lines,

Unknown Speaker 16:04

another

Ansel Burch 16:06

rock hard classic, nope,

Speaker 2 16:08

hey. And when you don't expect it, they just started like, and I was like, What

Sarah Moore 16:13

is going on? And then it's a surprise.

Ansel Burch 16:17

Yeah, yeah, it's a surprise every time. And it's a random, yeah, like with Arthur. Why are we singing about

Speaker 2 16:22

this? Arthur saggy and bang, their little thing. I was like, What is this

Ansel Burch 16:29

on the road? Again?

Sarah Moore 16:32

Such a weird, so strange, you

Ansel Burch 16:36

know, just just three besties, having a having a good

Sarah Moore 16:39

time. And then when Sandy came in at the beginning, her first entrance and just started, like, like, singing what felt like a very private song to

Speaker 2 16:52

her uncle. Everyone, everybody was listening,

Sarah Moore 16:56

it was like, a little too erratic for to be singing to your uncle? Yeah, I know. I'm crossing over

Ansel Burch 17:03

into review territory. Lancelot was supposed to be in that scene, yeah. And then

Sarah Moore 17:10

they were like, I don't know, he's on a different he's on a different lot today, shooting something else, because that's what they did. Whoops, I don't know. This is the only day we can shoot this. Just saying it to her uncle, whatever. It's normal.

Ansel Burch 17:25

It'll be fine. It'll be fine. Nobody's paying that much attention. No

Sarah Moore 17:28

one will even notice.

Ansel Burch 17:32

They'll forget this didn't make sense by the time they leave the theater.

Sarah Moore 17:37

Yeah, there are so many other confusing things here. It doesn't matter. I think I think that's what it is. Ansel, what is your first

Ansel Burch 17:45

rule? My first rule is whenever Bing winks, he does trademark Crosby winks, yeah, kill you. But certainly enough to keep the keep the thing rolling.

Sarah Moore 18:00

Um, yeah. And then do you also drink? When Sandy tries to wink, she tries real hard. No, I

Ansel Burch 18:10

didn't put that down, but I do like, yeah, she gets she does two or three. It only takes a few generations. Oh,

Unknown Speaker 18:23

yeah, between the year 505

Ansel Burch 18:26

100 some years, yeah,

Sarah Moore 18:28

drink the halt until the wink is over. It's a long it's a long pull on that one. My second rule is drink anytime. Saggy and Bing. Do something that makes it seem like they are the ones that are courting each other. I just felt like there was a deep connection between the two of

Speaker 2 18:49

them. It was a lot they had something going. I really

Ansel Burch 18:53

liked how familiar they were. Yeah,

Sarah Moore 18:55

they were so, like, physically, so comfortable with each other, in a way that I was like it. What are we? What's happening? I I love a queer story. Had, I don't think Hollywood loved a queer story in 1949 so I'm not sure what's happening here,

Unknown Speaker 19:16

but they teased it a little. When's the Hays

Sarah Moore 19:18

Code? 25 they did. They teased it a lot

Ansel Burch 19:21

1930s Yeah, so this is definitely under the code, oh, 100%

Sarah Moore 19:26

Yeah. It reminds me of, like, sneaky link. I'm gonna go ahead and just go on another tangent. You can cut it out if you need to

Ansel Burch 19:34

do it. We have a whole fourth episode just for tangents.

Sarah Moore 19:37

Perfect. You've seen hook, yeah? Okay, there is this amazing Classic Hollywood story about how Steven Spielberg went to Dustin Hoffman and was like, Hey, I'm not sure what's going on here, but it seems like you are playing you and Bob Hoskins are playing hook, and Smee like they're gay. And he was like, it's an old gay marriage cycle, correct? They. Are boyfriends, they have been married, they've been partners forever, and he's like, what that's not in the script and doesn't happen was like, it very clearly is. And I feel like that is a little bit what was happening here with with saggy and Bing Crosby's character, just like, like, they were just like, oh, well, obviously, like, he like, saves him from being, like, killed. Like, no, and he's always talking about how much he likes him, and, like, a lot of physical contact, like, Hey, you got

Ansel Burch 20:40

a you have a thing. It's the walking arm and arm that really sells

Unknown Speaker 20:44

it. Yeah, when they come into the ball and he, like, takes them up,

Sarah Moore 20:47

it's the walking arm and arm more than once, he's just like, oh, this is how we go places. What are you doing? We

Ansel Burch 20:55

We ship you. Yeah, we ship you. Saggy and Bing,

Unknown Speaker 20:59

boss, no. Sir, bang. What a choice.

Sarah Moore 21:06

It's a is a choice.

Ansel Burch 21:09

What have you got next?

Speaker 2 21:10

Ben, anytime something is supposed to happen on the morrow. Because that happens quite a few times. Take procrastinators. He's supposed to be killed on the morrow. Go to the mines on the morrow, like, yeah, the ball was tomorrow,

Sarah Moore 21:24

yeah. And if you're if you're drinking, like, hard stuff, I feel like that happens enough, not too many times, but like, you could probably do it like a shot of hard liquor on those and you would still be okay. Like, it happens enough frequently, enough that like you'd feel it, but like it wouldn't send you to the hospital. Problem, I

Ansel Burch 21:44

feel I can co sign that. I can co sign that, that that feels right. My next one is, is going to be a little bit more infrequent, and this is my only smoking rule. I don't do many smoking rules because I don't smoke myself, but this one just seemed too clever. Every time his hammer hits an anvil. Take a hit. Woof, everybody. It only happens in those two scenes, right?

Speaker 2 22:04

Say, Yeah, I couldn't think of when it happens. Besides those scenes,

Ansel Burch 22:11

you'll be, you'll be blazed up at the beginning and and hopefully good through, through almost till the end. Yeah.

Unknown Speaker 22:18

Mellow out until, until Act Two.

Ansel Burch 22:22

Rio, up, but yeah, so take a hit whenever the hammer hits the

Sarah Moore 22:25

anvil. I cannot actually endorse you doing this, because I feel like it would be this one dangerous warning. Yeah, um, every time someone comes on screen with that same haircut, the page Boy, that

Omar Burgos 22:45

was my next one.

Unknown Speaker 22:49

I also put the bob haircut, yeah,

Ansel Burch 22:55

including that one time that that Bing had it had

Unknown Speaker 22:59

it was his disguise.

Ansel Burch 23:03

Where did that come from?

Sarah Moore 23:07

Yeah, that's a very good you ever use, like, please be careful with it. Please be careful with it. Because I feel like there's one scene, and it's maybe the first time that we see King Arthur, where there's just, like, eight people in that in and in each shot just keeps changing the shine, like, oh my god, like you, you die. Please be careful.

Ansel Burch 23:32

Yeah, that is a that is a SIP rule at best. It'd be a really good one if you're just doing a pointing at this camera and going a

Sarah Moore 23:40

our drinking role in college, whenever we would watch Rudolph the Red Nose Ranger and the Island of Misfit choice was to drink every time Rudolph's nose lit

Ansel Burch 23:49

up. Oh, my gosh. Oh, that's hardcore.

Sarah Moore 23:53

I remember watching it later after I graduated from college and being like, I had no idea this scene was in this movie.

Unknown Speaker 24:01

Yeah, that'll take you places I can imagine.

Unknown Speaker 24:08

So

Ansel Burch 24:11

what's hardcore? I love that. Okay, so take, take a take a drink. Hypothetically, for for the bob haircut. How about you, Ben, what's your last one since we stole your Bob?

Speaker 2 24:26

I mean, we can share it. It's all good. This gonna also be a smoking rule anytime someone takes a bite out of a turkey leg. Oh, okay,

Ansel Burch 24:34

yeah, they're big, big roast beast, whatever that is, they were doing ham on it, which was crazy man. And Arthur just kept going back to it too. It was like the only thing he could think of to do in between lines was just like, I'm just gonna hold this to my mouth and hope that it covers that I'm, I don't know, laughing at somebody else or something.

Speaker 2 24:58

And then saggy had it when he visited. Yeah. Being in jail. He was just like, I brought this for you.

Ansel Burch 25:02

And he's like, I don't want he's like, Well, it's for him. Not gonna let it go to waste.

Sarah Moore 25:07

Also, like, I don't know if, if you have ever filmed where you have to eat, it is miserable. It is it's because you have to eat. Because, for for continuity, you have to eat every time she's like, Oh my God, it's terrible.

Ansel Burch 25:25

You have to hope it's something good, or at least something that will that you won't hate by the end.

Sarah Moore 25:30

No, you hate everything.

Speaker 2 25:33

Hate Everything by the end, yeah, I did a short film in college. I had to eat a bowl of chili, and they keep eating the same bowl of chili. It was miserable.

Sarah Moore 25:43

I had a scene where I had to eat a full plate of spaghetti with my hands. Of course, it had to be so I was like, picking up handfuls of spaghetti and eating it. And, like, I just, I was so much. It was so and like, I love pasta. By the end of that shoot day, I was like, I will never eat pasta again. It took me a while to come back to it.

Ansel Burch 26:12

Wow. Who wrote that script? Was that a was that a thing you did to yourself?

Sarah Moore 26:18

I was not a thing I did to myself. I would never, especially not after having to have done it. Yeah, no, it was not, it was not a thing I did for myself.

Ansel Burch 26:30

Somebody else is doing to round us out. Then my last rule is to take a drink whenever you see the big amulet that that is the sort of the MacGuffin of the movie, so to speak, uh huh. They make a big point of showing it whenever, whenever it's appearing. They center it in the frame. It's very

Sarah Moore 26:52

close up on Sandy's, boobs, lots of it, uh huh going in.

Ansel Burch 26:57

Got to make sure we see it. You guys see it, uh huh brooch that right there. That's, that's the thing. Remember, the thing that we're doing this that, yes, so whenever you see that, that old thing, also

Sarah Moore 27:09

the old guy in the castle at the end, I mean, like the book ends, right? That he's because he's telling the story to it. He, he stole that amulet. He just

Unknown Speaker 27:20

took it. You just kind of take it.

Sarah Moore 27:24

He did not give it back. He was like, Can I see that cool? And then just capped. It looks like, bro,

Ansel Burch 27:35

cool. Go meet my niece. That's that'll distract you. Yeah, he traded his niece for it.

Sarah Moore 27:43

I guess he bought it. Then, my bad. I don't know I was thinking, yeah,

Ansel Burch 27:47

oh,

Unknown Speaker 27:51

sorry, oh,

Ansel Burch 27:57

oh, well on that note, dear friends, that is it for our drinking and smoking rules episode. Join us next week when we will meet once again to discuss the film in all its glory, spoilers and all. We're going to review this thing and talk about all of its good points and bad points and what we liked and didn't like quirk points. But until then, we are available on the internet. You can find all of us. Ben, where can people find you on the interwebs, and what should they look for? Look

Speaker 2 28:29

for me on Instagram and SoundCloud at DJ, underscore, BL in DN, for our most active

Ansel Burch 28:37

Sarah, where should people go to find your stuff? You should look for

Sarah Moore 28:41

me all over the internet, at pixies and pins, including my Patreon that I have launched, where I do lots of weird ramblings, like you maybe just witnessed, which is also pixies and pins. You can't tell because this is a podcast, but I am giving you a thumbs up.

Ansel Burch 28:56

Big old thumbs up. I think you can hear it that thumbs Yeah. That feels right. If you're a subscriber to pixies and pins.
