An immersive RPG played entirely via text message. This is a silent role-playing game about the disappearance of Alice Briarwood, a high school junior in the small town of Silent Falls. Hauntingly beautiful, deeply personal, and highly innovative, Alice is Missing focuses on the emotional engagement between players, immersing them in a tense, dramatic mystery that unfolds organically through the text messages they exchange. Important: The goal is not to solve the mystery. Cliffhanger endings are very possible. The goal is to tell a story that explores the complicated relationships and motivations we all create during the setup; Alice's disappearance is just the backdrop for all of that. The session will start with some setup to gather more details about your characters, certain NPCs, and locations around town. We'll also go over the very simple rules and discuss safety tools. Players will also record their character's last voicemail to Alice before she disappeared, but in secret.
The setup phase is followed by the in-character part of the game, which is played without any verbal communication throughout the 90-minute play session. This is accompanied by its own timed soundtrack and timed card prompts to guide us. Instead of talking, you send text messages back and forth to the other characters in a group chat as well as private chats. Characters aren’t in the same place together; they're talking through their phones. After the timer runs out, we'll reveal and listen to the voicemails together, still in silence. This game can pack a pretty emotional punch, so we'll end our session by debriefing out-of-character and discussing the session in our voice channel to wrap things up. The cast of characters is pre-existing but involves some customization.
Character selection is handled ahead of time.
Due to the required setup, this game will take place in its own Discord server made just for our session. We'll also have the soundtrack open on YouTube and use a simple https://playingcards.io/ setup to draw and reveal cards when prompted.
